WE LIVE HERE 2018: In politics of co-creation

9 - 13 juli

WE LIVE HERE is a yearly summer academy at the end of the cultural season proposing time for experimentation, research and reflection beyond the scope of individual projects or production agendas. WE LIVE HERE was first initiated in 2011 by Nicole Beutler, Marijke Hoogenboom and Andrea Božić in order to create space and time to refuel at the end of a season. This edition is curated by Nicole Beutler and BAU Platform for Dance and Performance.

For the eighth time we invite professionals active in different fields of the performing arts and beyond to join a temporary community. This year WE LIVE HERE hosts two laboratories called ‘Politics of Co-creation’ and ‘What-If-Then’, an urban wildlife excursion, visits to Julidans performances and the THIRD! Cycle Research Programme at DAS Graduate School as well as several How Do You Work sessions.

Politics of Co-creation is guided by composer Alison Isadora. During the laboratory, a number of collaborative composition practices for time-based art are explored in respect to both ethical and artistic consequences. How do we communicate our artistic ideas with each other and what space is given for another to respond and/or participate? What role is played by the method of communication (the implications of a score), the specific creation and performance processes?

What-If-Then is devised by theatre maker Orion Maxted and media artist Marion Tränkle. What-If-Then brings together practitioners from the performing arts, complexity science, and computer programming to work together based on the most elemental rule of computing: If-Then. In both natural and human-made systems we observe that, when several If-Then rules are combined, it can result in emergence. A famous example is the murmuration of starlings whose complex swarming patterns are thought to derive from the combination of three simple rules. We want to explore the combining of rules for building participatory performance strategies and explore the conditions under which simplicity tips into emergence.

PARTICIPATE
WE LIVE HERE invites professional theatre makers, composers, musicians, performers, creative coders, researchers, thinkers and dramaturges from the Netherlands and Belgium to join the Labs. We ask participants for a modest contribution of €150 which covers lunch, dinner and tickets. There are a few sponsored spots available for participants on a budget. Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond provides free accomodation in Amsterdam for participants from Belgium for the whole period. To apply for one of the Labs, please send an email including a short biography and written motivation to Justa Ter Haar at welivehere@nbprojects.nl before 24 June 2018.
