NICOLE BEUTLER PROJECTS

Nicole Beutler Projects realises performances and curated events initiated by the choreographer, theatre director and artistic director Nicole Beutler. We produce interdisciplinary work in which music, dance and visual art play a substantial role for both large and small venues in the Netherlands and beyond.

All of our projects are driven by the desire to make the world a better place. Nicole Beutler’s activities are an invitation to connect and to reflect critically on the human existence. “It is my responsibility as an artist to open new spaces in our thinking, both societally and artistically. If we work together we can change the world.”

Nicole Beutler Projects works to promote a healthy, flourishing and diverse ecosystem for innovative dance and performance by supporting new makers and initiating activities to strengthen the scene.

We approach our work from a philosophy of non-hierarchical cooperation, slow production, long-term vision, and concern for the whole person and the planet. Quality, care and attention are the core values on which Nicole Beutler Projects build a diverse and inclusive company.
 

NICOLE BEUTLER

Nicole Beutler (born Munich, 1969) first studied Fine Art and German Literature followed by Choreography at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam. Over the past twenty years, Beutler has made her mark on the Dutch performing arts with her unique approach combining performance, dance, fine art and music theatre. Since 2009, Beutler has been artistic director of her own company, Nicole Beutler Projects. In addition to numerous nominations, her work has been honoured with, amongst others, the VSCD Mime Prize (1: SONGS 2009 & 8: METAMORPHOSIS 2020/2021) and the Dioraphte Prize (SHIROKURO 2014). In 2018, Beutler received the prestigious Gieskes-Strijbis Podium Prize for her diverse oeuvre. For the production 8: METAMORPHOSIS, she also received the MusicTheatreNow 2021 prize. Furthermore, the productions SHIROKURO and 8: METAMORPHOSIS were nominated for the Zwaan, as the most impressive dance production of the season. From 2021-24 Beutler was artist in residence at O. Festival for Opera. Music. Theatre in Rotterdam.

Throughout her career Beutler has allowed the body to ‘speak’ in all manner of ways: in relation to numerous dance forms, opera, urban arts, (live) music, text-based theatre, puppetry and visual arts. Her work takes place beyond genre boundaries as she creates theatre performances as a Gesamtkunstwerk; the form and content of each element – movement, words, space, light, sound, costumes – are carefully balanced in relation to the concept of each project. With her inquisitive eye, Beutler continually incorporates new influences into her work, thereby pushing the boundaries of what dance is. Her productions take universal, contemporary themes as their starting point; Beutler’s mission is to translate the human condition into a visual language that enables the audience to reflect and engage. Since 2018 Beutler has been focusing on the relationship of humankind to the planet in times of the climate crisis, to themes of social justice and the future.
