ROOM IN OUR HOUSE

A danced manifesto for peace in cocreation with Indigenous artists from North America

You can view the digital booklet on mobile and desktop.

Two men meet. In their bodies lies their strength. Both dancers live in the here and now. Yet, they are connected by a complex colonial history. One is the child of survivors, the other the heir of oppressors. Two worlds that clash. Is peace possible?

ROOM IN OUR HOUSE brings a groundbreaking counter narrative in this time of crises. Inspired by the centuries-old peace treaty between the Dutch and the Haudenosaunee, the NBP team immersed themselves in their community in the United States. A world of democracy, equality, and gentleness. Directed by inspirational speaker Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida/Haudenosaunee) and choreographer/theater director Nicole Beutler (Dutch-German), with texts by Indigenous writer and activist Ty Defoe, ROOM IN OUR HOUSE invites the audience to explore each individual's responsibility in peacemaking.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER / FUTURE STORIES
After completing the climate trilogy with the dance opera NOW WE ARE EARTH, Nicole Beutler Projects focuses on new perspectives on the future of humanity on Earth. Here, political-poetic performances are created that strive for an inclusive society and bring attention to social justice and Indigenous knowledge. For this production, Beutler sought a collaboration with Michelle Schenandoah, founder of Rematriation - an organization invested in uplifting Indigenous women’s voices.

ROOM IN OUR HOUSE contains English spoken text. The outdoor version will premiere on Friday 12 June at Oerol Festival 2026. The theater version premieres on Saturday 4 July at Julidans Festival 2026 and will tour the Netherlands this fall and the US next year.

REVIEWS

  • Welcoming dance ***

While the United States celebrated 250 years of independence with Trumpian patriotism last weekend, the creators of Room in Our House reached back another 150 years into North American history. In the early 17th century, Dutch ships sailed to Turtle Island, where they concluded an oral friendship treaty with the Haudenosaunee—before the colonization that led to Nieuw-Nederland, Nieuw-Amsterdam, and, eventually, New York. The Haudenosaunee generously made room for the uninvited visitors in their homeland.

In this austere trio, choreographer Nicole Beutler and co-director Michelle Schenandoah (a specialist in the Indigenous philosophy of Rematriation) reference this early act of diplomacy. After an extensive welcome ritual led by Mohawk elder Montana Adams, a tentative, friendly duet—with an outstretched hand—unfolds within the sand-marked circle between Oneida dancer Montana Summers and Dutch-German Rob Polmann (who begins the performance in wooden clogs). They “dance the silence their bodies carry.”

Much of the symbolism only becomes clear during the post-performance discussion, such as the meaning of the two purple parallel lines on a white band (the Two Row Wampum). Yet, the respectful ritual makes it evident how the creators draw hope from this never-broken, oral peace treaty.

  • This danced utopia sparks the imagination and pulses through to the very last row

The audience is gathered on all four sides, watching the action on a stage that is initially almost empty. The performers first step forward one by one, and after a brief introduction, storyteller Montana Adams begins to scatter a circle of sand, within which Room in Our House will unfold.

With the tagline A danced manifesto for peace, this performance is the result of a lasting collaboration between choreographer Nicole Beutler and Michelle Schenandoah, a specialist of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of nations in the northeastern United States, who is closely involved in the project.
